AmPPhi trains under the able tutelage of world-class athletes. Coach Annabelle Tario handles AmPPhi’s land and boat training. Herself a Southeast Asian Games medalist, Coach Annabs is the former coach of the Philippine Dragon Boat National Women’s Team, which bagged countless medals in the most prestigious dragon boat tournaments around the globe. She is also the drummer of Pinoy Dragon Warriors, the self-sustaining, all-Filipino team that brought home five gold and two silver medals from the 2011 International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) World Championships in Florida, USA.
Boat training is co-handled by Coach Junrey Dayumat of the Philippine Coastguard. He is an elite member of the former Philippine Dragon Boat National Men’s Team, usually playing stroke side pacer. He is part of the National Men’s Team that etched a world-record of 41 seconds in the 200m Open Event of the 2007 IDBF World Championships in Sydney, Australia. He was also part of the same crew that broke their own world record in the same category at the 2009 IDBF World Championships in Czech Republic with a record of 40 seconds. He was also the pacer of the Pinoy Dragon Warriors in 2011.
Although relatively a young team, AmPPhi has achieved significant feats in a number of local and international dragon boat racing events. On its fifth month of establishment, AmPPhi dared to test international waters by representing Quezon City in the 2012 Taipei International Dragon Boat Championships where it ranked 9th of 84 international teams in the Mixed Crew Standard Boat Category. Two months later, our women’s crew nabbed the 2nd runner up spot in the 2nd leg of the 2012 Philippine Dragon Boat Regatta held in Manila Bay. Just this November, our team ventured into our second out-of-the country race. Our women’s crew bagged silver, while our men’s crew ranked 5th in the Surabaya, Indonesia Open Dragon Boat Tournament. Just this November 2013, the team bagged two silvers and a bronze at the 2nd Celebes International Dragon Boat Festival held in Ujung Pandang, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.
